Is the Google-Verizon Deal a Sheep in Wolf Clothing?

For years Google has fought for a free and open Internet.  That’s why this deal with Verizon is so surprising.

My secret fantasy is that the Google-Verizon deal is actually the search giant punking the entire country.  In a massive instance of reverse psychology, Google is saying to consumers and the FCC: “Fine. You want to allow a tiered internet?  No problem.  Sign us up.  Just try to compete with us now that we pay for prioritized traffic. ”

There will be such outrage at this egregious use of power that everyone will wake up and see how important a free and open Internet really is.  And we will finally pass net neutrality legislation and Google, consumers, businesses, entrepreneurs, etc all come out the winners in the end.

Here’s hoping…
